Operation Rescue! ................................................... For thousands of young women a nightmare has turned into a dream come true! One of the most exciting, fruitful ministries of World Missions Far Corners is Operation Rescue which began in 1973. This new challenge began unexpectedly as a result of a short "sight-seeing" tour in the fabulous city of Bombay. However, this is a sight no tourist ever sees and most good citizens of Bombay seldom think about. The Cages of Bombay! 15,000 Young Women Prostitutes! As the full impact of the scene sinks in, forgotten are the masses of humanity flowing in all directions. You forget the cars, the pedestrians, the cyclists, carts, wagons, sacred cows, the dogs and the little children who are dodging the oncoming traffic, sprinkled generously with beggars. More than 15,000 girls are in this poor section. Their earnings ranging from 8 rupees per day (about 16 cents U.S.) to about 80 rupees a day (about $1.60 per day in 2009 dollars). The cages are small. Yet, four to six girls are cramped in each cage, selling their bodies for pennies. It's the "Red-Light District” -- ghettos with tiny, dark cages in squalor and filth. They are prison houses! However, the young women are not the only victims of this horrible situation, there are many little children. Some of them, playing in the filthy streets, watch the evil practice carried on. They are fatherless, offcasts of this twisted, evil life. This "sight seeing" tour was God's appointment—the beginning of a powerful, exciting ministry we call Operation Rescue. In the early days, the rescue of these women and girls was hectic and dangerous with monumental problems. Organized syndicated prostitution on this scale had muscle and power to withstand intruders. But Operation Rescue, the first of its kind, sprang forward. It’s a powerful ministry of compassion with its center in Christ and the Gospel. Its design is simple—rescue fallen women and their children. By God's leading, thousands of women, called Devadasis, were discovered—trapped in religious rituals such as temple prostitution, a system passed down for generations. These women are taught from birth that they are born to serve the gods for the pleasure of the temple priests and the wealthy and to serve the gods of lust for personal pleasure. These facts make harsh judgment of these women difficult. But God gives answers to thorny problems and it is amazingly simple to lead these girls to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Programs of rehabilitation and training are provided. Many New Life Centers are now in operation today. The centers are practical work shops where the needs of the whole person are met: body, soul and spirit. Venereal diseases are stamped out with a compassionate emphasis on spiritual transformation. Today, thousands of Devadasi women have accepted Jesus Christ, fled the slavery of prostitution, and are now in one of the many New Life Centers having their dreams fulfilled. Thousands of the rescued women have married and moved to other villages with their children, now new creatures in Christ, trained and equipped to take their place in society. No longer are they outcasts of society. They have regained their dignity and respect! Will you help WMFC as, together, we help young women turn their nightmares into dreams!
